A Review: Les Miserables

Last Week My Husband took me to watch the Oscar- nominated film, Les Miserables. One word for it: Obsessed! Projects such as this where the entire movie's dialogue is sung live shows that human beings are extremely talented species. I hardly felt the 2 Hrs 37 Min.

Anne Hathaway who plays Fantine haunts me. The way in which she sings and feels is moving and torturous which aptly fits the character. The basic storyline concerning Fantine is that she has a child at a very young age and is left by the father of her daughter. Fantine works in a factory to earn wages to uphold her daughter who lives with innkeepers. She keeps her child a secret and when the secret is exposed by her fellow factory workers she is condemned. Fantine resorts to prostitution to continue looking after her daughter. She becomes ill and is rescued by the Mayor who is partially responsible for putting her in that state. She dies with the knowledge that the Mayor will care for her daughter. Although the storyline should actually start from the death of Fantine, her presence continues to dominate in the film. Another stunning performance is given by Eponine played by Samantha Banks. Acutely aware of the rejection she has to face from the one she desires, the way in which she sings about rejection and love lost is felt by whoever watches it. Amazing voice and acting skills Anne Hathaway and Samantha Banks made a lasting impression.

Less impressed with Amanda Seyfried. The deer caught in headlights approach is becoming a bit tired. I felt that she could not connect with her supposed love interest for which her father risks everything to save him. Seyfried displayed more of a willingness to seduce her counterpart than showcase a deep love and being hopelessly inlove. However, Definetely one of the movies that I will remember and will count among my favorites.

They gave a touch of humour to an otherwise Dark Film
